Summary:

Access to knowledge can be expensive even when research is publicly funded. In order to oppose the monopoly imposed by some publishers, researchers and public authorities are working together to make all scientific publications available to all, free of charge. The article offers a brief overview of the state-of-the-art in scientific publishing, the development of the idea of Open Access, open archives and repositories, the role of research evaluation, etc.
