Comparing Funder Metadata in OpenAlex and Dimensions · Open ISU

Using the United States National Science Foundation (NSF) as a test case, I wanted to compare the number of records returned by OpenAlex and Dimensions with acknowledgments to this funder.

By looking beyond the 2017 year filter, the NSF group counts from the two databases were then compared going back in time to 2000. Overall, both databases generally find fewer records with NSF funding going back in time.

However, OpenAlex (orange line) finds less than half the records that Dimensions does (blue line) for the same funder group search and year.
